Lab Exam- Lung volumes Flashcards
What was the purpose of the lung volumes lab?
To look at resistive properties in normal and hyperinflated lungs
What was used to measure the volunteers lung volumes?
Spirometer pod
What is normal FEV1?
80% or greater
How do you calculate FEV1%?
(FEV1/FVC) x100
What is forced vital capacity?
Blow out as hard and as fast as you can
this will take longer with someone with resistive lung disease
What’s the difference between static and dynamic volume tests?
Static tests are based on the volumes of lungs where as dynamic tests involved time
All the air that is possible for the lungs to contain
Total lung capacity (TLC)
The maximum volume above the tidal volume that we can inhale into our lungs
Inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)
The maximum volume that we can exhale from our lungs at the end of a normal breath
Expiratory reserve volume (ERV)
The volume inhaled and exhaled during quiet breathing
Title volume (Vt)
The volume inhaled or exhaled from a persons lungs per minute
Respiratory minute volume
The volume of air remaining in the lungs after a full expiration
Residual volume (RV)
How might lung volumes and capacities be altered in a patient who struggles with breathlessness?
Increase in residual volume. The trapped air has expanded the lungs and the work of breathing is increased significantly
Vital capacity is the sum of what three volumes?
IRV + Vt + ERV
