LAB 9 Flashcards
what are exogenic processes?
- counteracting endogenic land forming processes
- erode rock matter from higher positions and transport it to be deposited in lower positions
what is weathering?
chemical or physical breakdown of rocks
what is mass wasting?
when gravity acts alone and is the principal force that erodes, transports, and deposits weathered rock material
what’s a geomorphic agent?
a moving medium
what’s a load?
solid and chemical materials being moved by a geomorphic agent
what is surface runoff?
surface water naturally flowing downslope over a land surface
what is surface runoff also called?
overland flow
what is sheet wash?
overland flow consists of a thin blanket of unchannelized sheet wash
what is surface runoff favored by?
presence of solid surface materials with few pore spaces or surface materials dominated by the very small clay-sized clasts
what is base flow?
groundwater in the subsurface may eventually seep directly into a stream channel below the water surface
what is discharge?
amount of water flowing past a given point in a stream per time unit
what are gaging stations?
streams at sites that measure discharge through the country
what are hydrographs?
graphs of which discharge data is plotted on and how it has changed over time
what is recurrence interval?
the average time between flow events of a given magnitude or larger
