what is infiltration?
water soaks through the ground

lies deeper under the surface than soil water does
what is a water table?
the top of the ground water zone
what is the soil water zone?
voids and cracks almost always contain some air as well as some water
what is field capacity?
water drains down to the ground water zone by gravity and leaves an ideal mix of water and air for plant growth
what is the soil water surplus?
excess over field capacity
what is actual evapotranspiration?
the total amount of water that is actually evaporated and transpired to the atmosphere from the soil water zone
what is the wilting point?
the only water left in the soil water zone is hygroscopic water held so tightly to the soil particles that plants are not capable of drawing it up
what is the soil water deficit (D)?
the amount of water that the plants would be using at the time if it were available
what is potential evapotranspiration?
the theoretical amount of evaporated and transpired water
what is the water budget?
inputs and outputs of water in the soil
