LAB 4 Flashcards
of the three types of matter, which is the least dense?
gas
what is absolute humidity?
actual quantity, the real amount of water vapor present in the air
what is saturation humidity?
the capacity of the air to hold moisture and is temperature dependent
what is fully saturated?
when an air parcel has the maximum amount of moisture that it can hold at its given temperature
what is dew point temperature?
the temperature to which a parcel of air would have to be cools so that it first arrives at full saturation
what is relative humidity?
simply an expression showing what percentage of the moisture-coding capacity is actually filled in a parcel of air
what is the sling psychrometer?
consists of two identical thermometers with the exception that the tip of one is covered with a small piece of wet cloth
what is the dry bulb temperature?
when the device is spun around (slung) and the dry bulb thermometer records the actual air temperature when using the psychrometer
what is the wet bulb depression?
dry bulb temperature minus the wet bulb temperature
what are adiabatics?
refers to the fact that the temperature of a gas changes as it compresses or expands
what is the moist adiabatic lapse rate? (MALR)
the rate at which rising saturated air cools
what is the dry adiabatic lapse rate? (DALR)
the rate at which unsaturated air cools at the rate at which descending, unsaturated air warms
all ____ air is ____
descending
unsaturated
what is the environmental lapse rate?
decreases at a 3.5ºF per 1000ft
what is the condensation level?
the height above the surface where the air has first cooled below its dew point temperature
