what is a climograph and what does it show?
- distinctive graph
- shows average monthly precipitation as a bar graph along the lower part of the vertical axis and mean monthly temperature on the upper part of the vertical axis
what is climate defined as?
long-term average of weather for a given location
what is the Koppen climate classification system?
used maps of natural vegetation. plants show areas climate variables.
what are highland climates?
represent any place where the climate is different because of elevation from what would ordinarily have been found for the place’s latitude, relationship to the ocean, etc.
what are A climates?
humid and hot all year
what are B climates?
nearer tropics and dry
what are C climates?
humid, warm to hot summers, mild winters
what are D climates?
humid, cold winters, cool-hot summers
what are E climates?
cold all year
what are arid climates?
those in which where there is a significant moisture shortage for vegetation
what is desert vegetation?
specially adapted for severe moisture stress
what is potential evapotranspiration?
total amount of water that the atmosphere could take up through evaporation from the earth’s surface plus what it receives from plants by transpiration over a given time period
what is steppe?
short grasses
what is tundra?
general name for the various types of plants that have adapted to the stress of long cold periods
what are the three arid climates?
tropical dry
subtropical dry
mid-latitude dry
