LAB 10 Flashcards
what is a drainage basin?
the area in which an organized system of tributaries lies and from which it gathers its water
what is a drainage divide?
a drainage basin separated by an adjacent one
what is stream ordering?
a way of keeping track of where an individual stream ad its drainage vase lie in the hierarchy of tributaries and drainage basins
what is a channel pattern?
a braided or a meandering pattern
what is alluvium?
the general term for any sediment deposited by a stream regardless of the channel type
what is point bar?
an accumulation of stream-deposited sediment on the inside of a meander bend
what is cut bank?
the new-vertical cliff eroded on the outside of a meander bend
what is a natural levee?
a ridge of flood deposits located along the banks of a meandering channel
what is an oxbow lake?
a standing body of water that has accumulated in an abandoned or cut-off meander
what is a floodplain?
- gently sloping low relief area that lies adjacent to a stream channel and is subject to frequent flooding
- consist of alluvium deposited during floods and when the meandering stream occupied a different position in the valley
what is an alluvial terrace?
remnant piece of an older, higher floodplain that was constructed by the stream when it flowed at a higher level in the valley
what is a delta?
- alluvium deposited where a stream discharges into a standing body of water, such as a lake of the ocean
- deltas are actually transitional between fluvial and coastal landforms
