Lab 7 Flashcards
Adrenal cortex
Outer layer of adrenal gland, composed of epithelial tissue, makes cortisol, aldosterone, androgen
Adrenal medulla
Inner tissue of adrenal gland, composed of neural tissue, makes epinephrine and norepinephrine
Insulin resistance
Reduced ability for cells to respond to insulin, results in hyperglycemia, occurs in pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes gestation diabetes
Type I diabetes
Inability of pancreas to make insulin that results in hyperglycemia
Type II diabetes
Inability/reduced ability of tissue cells to respond to insulin that results in hyperglycemia above certain levels
Prediabetes
Inability/reduced ability of tissue cells to respond to insulin that results in hyperglycemia above certain levels but below certain levels
**do a little more research
Gestational diabetes
Inability/reduced ability of tissue cells to respond to insulin that onsets during pregnancy, results in hyperglycemia above certain levels
Optical density
The degree to which light can be transmitted through a solution, used to figure out blood glucose levels
Hormones that increase appetite
Ghrelin released from stomach to signal hypothalamus
NYP and Agrp released from hypothalamus to create hunger cues
Hormones that decrease appetite
PYY, GLP-1, CCK released from intestines to signal hypothalamus
Leptin released from fat to signal hypothalamus
More POMC production in hypothalamus triggers satiety cues
