Lab 6 Flashcards
Steroids
Fat soluble hormones, derived from cholesterol, includes sex hormones, cholesterol, etc.
Amino acid based hormones
Water soluble, derived from amino acids, ex. norepinephrine
Peptide hormones
Water soluble hormones, made of short chains of proteins, ex. Oxytocin
Water-soluble hormone
Short half-life, activates membrane bound receptors
Fat soluble hormone
Long half life, activates intracellular receptor, requires blood transport protein
Humoral stimuli
Changes in extracellular fluid components that trigger hormone release
Hormonal stimuli
When one hormone triggers hormone release
Neural stimuli
When neural stimuli triggers hormone release (innervation of a gland)
Negative feedback
End product inhibits hormone relase
Positive feedback
End product causes release of more hormone
Antagonism
When two hormones have opposite actions on a regulated variable
Permissiveness
When one hormone requires the presence of another hormone to have an effect
Synergism
When 2 hormones have the same actions on a regulated variable
PTU
Propylthiouracil; substance that inhibits production of thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland but does not inhibit TSH production
Hypophyseal portal system
Capillary network within anterior pituitary
