Lab 1 - Safety and The Scientific Method Flashcards
Four types of waste disposal
Non-infectious/non-biohazard, non-sharps; non-infectious/non-biohazard, sharps; infectious/biohazard, non-sharps; infectious/biohazard, sharps
What is an SDS?
Safety Data Sheet
What does GHS stand for?
Global Harmonized System

Flame over circle: Oxidizing gases, oxidizing liquids, oxidizing solids

Flame: flammables, pyrophorics, self-heating, emits flammable gas, self-reactives, organic peroxides

Exploding bomb: Explosives, self-reactives, organic peroxides

Corrosion: Skin corrosion/burns, eye damage, corrosive to metals

Gas Cylinder: Gases under pressure

Environment: aquatic toxicity

Skull & Crossbones: Acute toxicity (fatal or toxic)

Exclamation Mark: Irritant (eye & skin), skin sensitizer, acute toxicity, narcotic effects, respiratory tract irritant, hazardous to ozone layer (non-manadatory)

Health Hazard: Carcinogen, mutagenicity, preroductive toxicity, respiratory sesitizer, target organ toxicity, aspiration toxicity
Under the new GHS scale, which is more hazardous - a 1 or a 5?

Name the steps of the scientific method.
Develop hypothesis, experiment, gather and analyze data, refine hypothesis or propose alternative hypothesis.
Independent variable
Variable that changes unrelated to other factors; a variable that is manipulated or changed on purpose; graphed on x-axis
