L5 structure and development of the cardiovascular system Flashcards
what is the pericardium
connective tissue sheath that covers heart
list the layers of the pericardium
- outer fibrous
- parietal pericardium (middle)
- epicardium
function of outer fibrous layer of pericardium
anchors heart to diaphragm
function of parietal pericardium
middle layer of pericardium
lines inner surface of fibrous layer
function of epicardium
innermost - has a fluid filled space between it and the pericardium which reduced friction
function of fibrous skeleton of heart
- separates atria from ventricles
- support
- separates flow of electrical impulses
where do coronary arteries arise from
aortic sinuses
how does blood enter coronary arteries from aortic sinus
when heart is relaxed blood backflows into sinus - coronary artery
how is venous blood drained from heart
cardiac veins - great cardiac vein - coronary sinus - right atrium
describe the atrioventricular valves
left - bicuspid
right - tricuspid
name the two semilunar valves
aortic
pulmonary
function of atrioventricular valves
prevent backflow of blood from ventricles to atria when heart contracts
how do atrioventricular valves work
- contraction of ventricles contracts papillary muscles
- papillary muscles are attached to cords which are attached to cusps
- cusps swing together preventing backflow
how do semi lunar valves work
- force of blood from ventricles opens valves
2. elastic recoil closes valves
what valves rely on muscle contraction to close
AV
what is order of blood flow in heart starting with body
body ] (superior&inferior vena cava) right atrium ] (tricuspid AV) right ventricle ] (pulmonary SL valve) pulmonary artery to lungs ] (pulmonary vein) left atrium ] (bicuspid AV) left ventricle ] (aortic SL valve) aorta ] body
