Joints Flashcards
What are joints where bones are united by fibrous tissue
Synarthroses (fibrous joint). Includes synostosis and syndesmosis.
What is a syndesmosis
A fibrous unfused joint e.g. Interosseous membrane
What is a salta harris fracture
Fracture at the epiphyseal plate
What kind of joint are the costal cartilages
Synchondroses
What is a synostosis
A fibrous fused joint. E.g. the sutures in the skull
What are the two classifications of synchondroses
Primary- bone cartilage bone. Eg epiphyseal plate
Secondary- Bone, cartilage, fibrous connective tissue, cartilage bone. e.g. intervertebral disc.
What are diarthroses
Synovial joints. Bone, cartilage, joint space. cartilage, bone.
What happens in a slipped disc
The posterior anulus fibrous breaks allowing the nucleus purposes to extrude out. This often happens in lumbar region where np is most posterior.
What is a prolapsed disc
When the NP enters the coarse cancellous bone of the vertebral body
What are the features of diarthrosis or synovial joints
Joint cavity Articular cartilage (hyaline) Synovial membrane Synovial fluid Fibrous capsule May have a meniscus
What produces the synovial fluid
The synovial membrane
