Anterior and lateral compartment Flashcards
What is the sheet of tissue between the tibia and fibula called?
The interosseous membrane made from deep fascia
Describe how compartment syndrome develops
If tibia or fibula broken blood fluid from bone marrow leaks into anterior compartment where there is no where for the fluid to go pressure builds up.
Describe dorsiflexion
Moving foot towards shin. Extension of ankle
Describe plantarflexion
Pointing toes towards ground. Flexion of ankle
Describe inversion and eversion
Inversion ankle rolling medially.
Eversion ankle rolling laterally.
Name the muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg
Tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallicus longus, peroneus tertius
Tibialis anterior
Origin superior half of lateral tibia and IO membrane. Insertion medial cuneiform and base of 1st metatarsal. Action dorsiflexion of ankle and inversion of foot. Nerve deep peroneal
Extensor digitorum longus
Origin lateral condoyle of tibia and superior 3/4 of medial fibula and IO membrane. Insertion middle and distal phalanges of four toes.
Action extends toes and dorsiflexes ankle.
Nerve deep peroneal
Extensor hallicus longus
Origin middle anterior fibula. Insertion Base of distal phalanx of great toe.
Extends toe and dorsiflexes ankle. Deep peroneal nerve
Peroneous tertius
Inferior 1/3 of anterior fibula and IO membrane. Insertion base of fifth metatarsal.
Dorsiflexes ankle, everts foot at subtler joint. Deep peroneal nerve
Muscles of the lateral compartment
Peroneus longus.
Peroneus brevis
Peroneus longus
Origin superior 2/3 lateral fibula. Insertion base of 1st metatarsal and medial cuneiform (long tendon runs under foot). Everts foot, weak plantar flexion. Nerve superficial peroneal
Peroneus brevis
Origin inferior 2/3 lateral fibula. Insertion base of 5th metatarsal. Everts foot and weak plantar flexion. Superficial peroneal.
What is the job of the retinaculum
Prevents bowstringing and damage to tendons.
What are the spinal levels that contribute to the sciatic nerve
L4 L5 S1 S2 S3
What are the branches of the sciatic nerve
Tibial and common peroneal nerve.
What does the common peroneal nerve branch into
The deep peroneal and superficial peroneal nerves
Describe the nerve that branches from the tibial and common peroneal nerves
Sural nerve. Runs down posterior of leg suppling skin.
What nerve supplies most of the dorsal surface of the foot
The superficial peroneal nerve
What nerve supplies the webspace between the 1st and 2nd toes
The deep peroneal
What nerve supplies the medial side of the foot
The saphenous nerve
What nerve covers the lateral border of the foot
The sural nerve
What nerve would you use for a nerve biopsy
Sural nerve
What are the main actions of the lateral compartment leg muscles
Eversion of the ankle and weak plantar flexion. Origin is lateral fibula insertion longus- first cuneiform, braves base of 5th metatarsal
What nerve supplies the first webspace in the foot (between big two and 2nd toe)
Deep peroneal
What arteries branch from the femoral artery and which gives off a branch that can be used as a pulse (and name it)
Anterior and posterior tibial arteries and the peroneal artery. The anterior tibial artery gives off dorsalis pedis which can be used for a pulse in line with the second toe.
