Joints Flashcards
What is an example of a fibrous joint?
Joints between skull bones
Describe a fibrous joint
Connected by fibrous connective tissue
Very little or no movement
Describe cartilaginous joints
No space between bones
Little or no movement
Tight connection of cartilaginous tissue
Where are cartilaginous joints found?
Where right and left sides of the body join together
Describe a synovial joint, and where are they found?
Allows plenty movement
Have several anatomical features
Shoulder, elbow joints
What is the function of synovial fluid in synovial joints?
Fills space between bones/lubricates, absorbs shocks, and nourishes cartilage
What is the function of hyaline cartilage in synovial joints?
Covers bone to provide smooth surface and absorb shocks
What is the joint capsule in synovial joints?
Tough capsule which encloses joint & is lined by the synovial membrane which secretes synovial fluid
What is the function of ligaments in synovial joints?
Join bones together and strengthen the joint capsule at points of stress
Describe a ball and socket joint and where are they found?
Consist of rounded ball sitting with a cup
Allows movement in many direction
Found in shoulder and hip
Describe a hinge joint and where are they found?
Allow 180• movement in one direction only
E.g flexion and extension
Found in the elbow and stifle
Describe semi-moveable joints and where are they found?
Allow slight movement
Found in the spine
Describe immovable joints and where are they found?
Do not allow any movement
Found in the skull
Describe gliding joints and where are they found?
Bones that slide over each other
Found in joints between the rows of carpal & tarsal bones
During locomotion and under stress what are joints stability improved by?
1-surrounding muscles and tendons
2-ligaments (link bone to bone)
3-Good bone conformation- this ensures weight is supported by the correct part of the bone.
