Enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst
What enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide?
Catalase
HPCOW
Hydrogen peroxide+ catalase = oxygen+water
What is the name give to a substance upon which an enzyme works?
Substrate
Why is an enzyme said to be complimentary to its substrate?
As each enzyme is specific to its substrate because of the shape of its active site
What are enzymes made of?
Protein
What does breaks down starch hand what does it form?
Amylase
Forms maltose (a simple sugar)
What is a synthesis reaction?
Reaction which Builds up molecules
What is the substrate of phosphorylase?
Glucose-1-phosphate
What is the product of phosphorylase?
Starch
Why do plants store starch instead of glucose?
As starch will not diffuse out of a cell
What is a catalyst?
A substance which speeds up a chemical reaction without itself being changed by the reaction
