Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the Function of the follicle stimulating Hormone?
It stimulates development of follicles in the ovary to cause growth and maturation of egg.
Name the 6 Hormones in the Anterior Pituitary Gland.
1- Thyroid stimulating Hormone (TSH) 2-Growth Hormone (GH) 3- Adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) 4- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) 5- Luteinising Hormone (LH) 6- Prolactin
What is the function of Luteinising Hormone?
Causes rupture of follicles (ovulation) and development of the corpus luteum.
What is the function of prolactin?
It stimulates development of mammary glands and secretion of milk.
What is the function of the thyroid stimulating gland?
1- Acts on thyroid glands
2- Produces and releases thyroxine
What is the function of the growth hormone?
1- Stimulates growth in body
2- Important when animal is young
What is the function on Adrenocorticotropic? (ACTH)
1- Acts on adrenal cortex
2- stimulates growth
3- stimulates production and release of cortisol
Name the hormones in the posterior pituitary gland, and also their functions.
1- Anti-diuretic Hormone: Acts on collecting ducts of kidney, causes resorption of water.
2-Oxytocin: Stimulates uterine contractions during parturition.
Name the hormones in the Adrenal-Medulla Gland, and also their functions.
1- Adrenaline: Prepares animal for dangerous and stressful situations. ‘Fight or flight’
2-Noradrenaline: Also prepares animal for dangerous and stressful situations.
Name the hormone in the thyroid gland, and also it’s function.
1- Thyroxin: Stimulates metabolism in body tissues.
Name the hormone in the Parathyroid gland, and also it’s function.
Parathormone:
1- Stimulates calcium resorption from bones.
2- Promotes calcium uptake from intestine.
Name the hormones in the pancreas gland and also it’s function.
1- Insulin: Increases uptake of glucose into cells, stores excess glucose as glycogen.
2- Glucagon: Release of stored glycogen from the liver to be converted into glucose.
Name the hormones in the ovaries and also their functions.
1- Oestrogen: Develops secondary sexual characteristics and behavioural change in female.
2- Progesterone:
- Prepares reproductive tract for pregnancy
- Develops mammary glands
- Maintains pregnancy
Name the hormone in the testes, and also it’s function.
1- Testosterone:
- Develops male secondary sexual characteristics and behavioural change.
- Sperm development.
Name the hormones in the Adrenal-Cortex Gland, and also their functions.
1- Cortisol:
- Effects rise in blood glucose.
- Stimulates protein breakdown
- Inhibits inflammatory response
2- Aldosterone: Maintains correct mineral balance in body (sodium and potassium)
