Digestive System Flashcards
What is the function of the mouth in the digestive system?
Mechanically breaks down food by chewing
What is peristalsis?
Rhythmic involuntary contractions of the smooth muscle (to move food along digestive tract)
What is the function of the tongue?
Mixes food and makes swallowing happen/easier.
What is the function of salivary glands?
Produces saliva to act as a lubricant.
Contains enzyme amylase which starts chemical breakdown of food in omnivores and herbivores
What is the function of the oesophagus?
Carries food from the mouth to the stomach
What is the function of the cardiac sphincter?
The muscle which controls the passing of food from oesophagus to the stomach
What is the Function of stomach?
Temporary store for food
Mechanical breakdown continues and churned then broken down to small particles.
Mixes with hydrochloric acid which kill organisms.
What is the Function of pyloric sphincter?
Control passing of food from the stomach to the small intestine
What is the Function of the liver?
Production of bile Storage of foodstuff Manufacture of proteins Production of heat Processing waste products Detoxification of any harmful substances
What is the Function of pancreas?
Produces hormones insulin and glucagon to control sugar levels in blood
Produce enzymes which digest proteins, fats, carbs in small intestine.
Enzymes essential for chemical digestion
What enzymes does the pancreas produce?
Amylase
Lipase
Trypsin
What enzyme digests carbohydrate and what is the product?
Amylase
Product: sugars
What enzyme breaks down fat molecules and what is the product?
Lipase
Product: fatty acid+glycerol
What enzyme breaks down protein and what is the product?
Trypsin
Product: Amino acids
What is function of bile duct?
Tube that bile travels down to small intestine to aid in fat digestion
