Joints Flashcards
What are the three types of joints?
- fibrous
- cartilaginous
- synovial
What is a fibrous joint?
Present as sutures in the skull or syndesmoses between two areas of bone
What is a cartilaginous joint?
- type of joint where the bones are entirely joined by cartilage
What are synovial joints?
wide range of movement
locomotion
Characterised by the presence of:
- synovial membrane
- fibrous joint capsule
- articular surfaces
- synovial fluid
- ligaments
- meniscus/menisci
what movement does a condylar joint do and give an example?
- convex surface which fits on to a concave surface to allow flexion and extension
- stifle
what movement does a ellipsoidal joint do and give an example?
- sliding
- radiocarpal joint
what movement does a hinge joint do and give an example?
- in one plane
- elbow
what movement does a pivot joint do and give an example?
- rotational
- atlanto-axial joint (rotational movement of the head); radius and ulna
- c1 and c2
what movement does a plane joint do and give an example?
- sliding
- between carpal and tarsal bones
what movement does a saddle joint do and give an example?
- It is a joint elevation that appears like a saddle
- phalanges
what movement does a spheroidal (ball and socket) joint do and give an example?
- rotational
- hip (between femur and acetabulum)
what is a menisci joint?
- disc of fibrocartilage in the cartilaginous joint
- between two articular surfaces
- aids smooth joint movement
- shock absorbers
