Joints Flashcards
What are the 3 types of joints (in terms of movement)?
Synarthroses - immovable (joints between bones of skull)
Amphiarthroses - limited mobility (joint that unites bodies of adjacent vertebrae)
Diarthroses - freely movable (uniaxial, biaxial, multiaxial)
Cartilaginous joints (fibro or hyaline cartilage)
Synchondroses - bones united by single layer of hyaline cartilage
Symphysis - articulating surfaces of bones covered in hyaline cartilage with a layer of fibrocartilage between them
Fibrous joints (Dense CT) - add detail/incomplete
Sutures
Syndesmosis
Gomphosis
Synovial joint
Articulating bones covered in hyaline cartilage (hard and smooth, allows bones to move)
Synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid into joint cavity (lubricates articular cartilage)
What are different types of synovial joint?
Gliding joint - joint surfaces flat, equal length
Hinge joint - allows movement about 1 axis
Pivot joint - movement occurs at singular axis with 1 bone rotating around another
Ellipsoid joint -
Ball and socket joint - Multiaxial joint
Saddle joint - Where 2 surfaces are reciprocally concave or convex (Ying and yang)
Joint arthrokinematics
Specific movement of joint surfaces
