Cartilage Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 main types of cartilage and where are they located?
(Only need to know 2)
A
Hyaline cartilage - ends of bones
Fibrocartilage - discs in spine
Elastic cartilage - ears
2
Q
Hyaline cartilage: structure (cells and ground substance) and function
A
Cells: Chondrocytes (maintains matrix)
Ground substance: Resilient gel, fine collagen fibres
Function: Covers articular surfaces at joints, reduces friction, absorbs shock
3
Q
Fibrocartilage: structure (matrix) and function
A
Matrix: Bundles of thick collagen fibres, gives strength
Function: Forms discs and rings between joints (spinal discs), great strength and elasticity, resists lots of pressure
