Bones Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 5 types of bones?

A

Long bones - support weight of body, facilitate movement appendicular skeleton
Sesamoid bones - imbedded in tendons, used to protect tendons (hands, feet, knees)
Irregular bones - vary in shape and structure (pelvis, spine)
Flat bones - large area for muscle attachment, protection (cranium, sternum)
Short bones - provide stability, allow movement (wrist and ankle joint)

A

Bone forming cells, found at sites where bones are growing (site of a fracture/creating new bone)

Q

Osteocytes

A

Mature bone cells located deep within mineralised bone, sensitive to mechanical strain, communicate with osteoblasts/clasts (surface).

They monitor and maintain bone tissue

Q

A

Development of bone tissue. Bone tissue starts as cartilage. Development of long bones - osteoblasts secretes osteoid, replaces cartilage model
