Joint Types Introduction - Fibrous Joints - Flashcards
What do all fibrous joints have in common?
All fibrous joints are joined by fibrous connective tissue,
meaning a short ligament.
What is unique about the movement that takes place at
these joints compared to a joint like the knee (that also
has ligaments)?
Unlike the knee, fibrous joints usually have no movement,
although one type has limited movement.
Because of their movement, what two terms are used to
describe fibrous joints?
Fibrous joints are usually synarthrotic (no movement),
but a few are amphiarthrotic (allow limited movement).
Give the specific names for the fibrous joints shown.
(a) = Suture
(b) = Syndesmosis (shown between distal ends of tibia & fibula)
(c)= Gomphosis (periodontal ligaments hold teeth in
socket)
This joint between the ulna and radius has a large
interosseus ligament found in the gap between the
bones.
Which of the three fibrous joint types is it?
This is a syndesmosis.
