Bone Formation ( Ossification) B-- Endochondral Flashcards
What tissue is gradually turned into bone in this process?
Hyaline cartilage
Which bones of the skeleton are made?
All bones except flat bones of the skull and clavicles
Why does endochondral ossification occur up until puberty?
To allow bones to grow in length
In what specific part of bones does this process occur in up until puberty?
In the growth plates or metaphyses
What are the 6 main events of endochondral ossification?
1) Cartilage growth (forms basic size and shape of the bone it will become)2. Periosteum form on the surface of the cartilage 3. Compact bone forms under the periosteum 4. Calcification occurs, causing cavitation (calcium is added, causing a hole to form as cartilage dies) 5. Primary Ossification Centers appear (which form spongy bone of the shaft) 6. Secondary Ossification Centers appear (which form spongy bone of the knobby ends).
What unusual happens to the cartilage cells (chondrocytes) before the cartilage is replaced by bone?
The chondrocytes enlarge, called hypertrophy. (This happens at step 4).
