because endochondral ossification occurs within the growth plates during that
time.

The steps in the formation of bone can be seen in the CELL LAYERS OF
THE GROWTH PLATES (METAPHYSES):
(must be in correct order)

1) Zone of Resting or Reserve Cartilage (nearest to epiphysis)
2) Zone of Proliferation (Cartilage growth)
3) Zone of Hypertrophy (Cartilage puffs up and gets big)
4) Zone of Calcification (puts calcium in)
