Bone Anatomy notes Flashcards
What is the Diaphysis
The hollow shaft made of compact bone
What is the Epiphysis
The rounded ends, filled with spongy bone and covered by outer layer
of compact bone
What is the Metaphysis/Growth Plate
Area between diaphysis and epiphysis. Before
puberty contains the epiphyseal growth plate. After
puberty, when the growth plate disappears, contains the
epiphyseal line (scar where growth plate was).
What is Articulation
Where two or more bones come together to form a joint
What is Medullary Cavity (Bone Marrow Cavity)
Red Bone Marrow/ Myeloid Tissue
Yellow Bone Marrow
Endosteum
Red Bone Marrow/ Myeloid Tissue
The birthplace of RBC’s and WBC’s; Located throughout skeleton of children but
only in select locations of adult skeleton.
What type of C.T is in the Red Bone Marrow/ Myeloid Tissue?
Reticular C.T.
Major locations of RBCs in adults
- Pelvic
2. Proximal epiphyses of femer and humerus
Minor location of RBCs in adults
Ribs
vertebrea
skulls
What type of C.T is in the Yellow Bone Marrow?
Primarily adipose tissue
Most myeloid tissue turns into
this.
Yellow Bone Marrow
Membrane made of a single layer of osteoblasts and osteoclasts
which lines the medullary cavity and covers trabeculae of spongy
bone
Endosteum
Essential because it provides bone cells needed for
growth, remodeling, and repair of bone.
What is Endosteum & Perlosteum
Location/source of osteoblast
What is Periosteum
Covers outer surface of bones
Periosteum has two layers….
Outer layer & inner layer
