Used in very hasty construction for temporary framing lapping one piece over other, not a strong joint
Plain Joint (Lap Joint)
Placing full thickness of wood directly against second piece; squared to be perpendicular to each other
Butt/ Square Joint (End Joint)
Toe nailed
Butt/Square/End Joint
Made when two pieces do not meet at right angle; nailed securely together
Oblique Joint
Joint two pieces united for continuous piece, beveled, chamfered, notched
Scarf Joint
Building wooden framework strength and rigidity are important
Mortise & Tenon
Joint made by cutting half the thickness of wood from each piece; maintain level surface
Halved Joint
Cutting shoulder or edge to receive other piece; window door and shelves
Rabbet Joint
same to rabbet joint; groove made into right angle; nailed at end provide strength
Dado Joint
Joint two pieces at corner at 45 degree secured by nails; finished joint should not be used where strength is not important,
Miter Joint
joint for cabinet and furniture work, strong and durable, by cutting pin in shape of Dovetail
Dovetail Joint
joint fitting one piece of molding at right angle to second piece; shiplapped and tongue & grooved
Coped Joint
Short flat piece of lumber bolted nailed butting pieces to splice them together
Scab
Wood or metal piece used to fasten together ends nails or bolts
Fish Plate
Half lapped Scarf joint; reinforced fishplate used to resist tension
