Isolating Mechanisms Flashcards
1
Q
Ecological (geographical)
A
Population seperated by geographical barrier. The habitat conditions differ so there are selection pressures. Seperated populations have different random mutations, over generations they may have evolved into different species or two populations may live in the same area but don’t interbreed as they don’t meet e.g live in different trees.
2
Q
Seasonal (temperal)
A
Two populations unable to interbreed as active at different times of day or year.
3
Q
Reproductive
A
Different courtship behaviours, mechanical problems with mating e.g different sized reproductive organs, gametes not compatible so can’t fuse, zygote is not viable and dies, hybrid offspring are sterile.
