Detoxification of Alcohols Flashcards
1
Q
1.
A
Alcohol oxidised to ethanal by ethanol dehydrogenase.
2
Q
2.
A
Ethanal oxidised to acetate by ethanal dehydrogenase.
3
Q
3.
A
H atoms lost from alcohol and ethanal are picked up by NAD which reduces it.
4
Q
4.
A
Acetate is combined with CoA and carried into Kreb’s Cycle.
5
Q
Too much alcohol
A
Metabolosing alcohol requires NAD, therefore it is not available to oxidise fatty acids for respiration. Fatty acids converted back to lipids and stored in hepatocytes. If they accumulate the liver becomes large and it results in cirrhosis or hepatitis.
