Innate Behaviour Flashcards
Escape Reflexes
Rapid unconscious response to potentially dangerous stimulus to protect body and escape predators e.g earthworm withdrawing underground in response to ground vibrations.
Kinesis
Non-directional response resulting in an increased rate of movement/activity e.g woodlice respond to dry areas by moving faster, in humid areas they move more slowly and accumulate there. It increases chance of survival as don’t lose as much water and find more food in dead matter.
Taxes
Directional locomotory response to a directional stimulus. It can be positive (towards stimulus) or negative (away) e.g maggots can detect light with photoreceptors at their anterior end. They move away from the light source showing negative phototaxis. This enables them to avoid predators and to find food.
