Adaptions of Mitochondria Flashcards
1
Q
Mitochondria Envelope
A
Isolates reactions from others in cytoplasm that could interfere.
2
Q
Envelope Membrane
A
Controls entry of Pyruvate, ADP, Pi and oxygen, and exit of ATP, carbon dioxide and NAD.
3
Q
Matrix
A
The site of the link reaction and Krebs cycle so contains dehydrogenases and decarboxylases enzymes. Ribosomes and DNA coding for respiratory enzymes and membrane proteins so they can be synthesised.
4
Q
Cristae
A
Inner membrane is folded to increase surface area for attachment of electron carriers and ATP synthase.
5
Q
Intermembranal Space
A
Allows proton gradient to be set up.
6
Q
Size
A
Only 1 micro meter in diameter, giving a short diffusion pathway which maximises rate of reactions.
