F214 Definitions Flashcards
Negative Feedback
Process in which any change within a parameter bring about the reversal of that change so the condition is kept fairly constant.
Positive Feedback
Process in which any change in a parameter brings about an increase in that change e.g oxytocin release in birth.
Homeostasis
Maintenance of constant internal environment within a parameter despite external change.
Endotherm
Organism that can control production and loss of heat to maintain their body temperature.
Endocrine Gland
Gland which secretes hormones directly into blood capillaries.
Exocrine Gland
Gland which secretes substances into a duct.
Hormones
Molecules secreted into blood that acts as a chemical receptor.
Target Tissue
Cells that have receptors in CSM that are complementary in shape to a specific hormone.
Excretion
Removal of metabolic waste from the body.
Autotroph
Organism that makes own food using simple inorganic molecules and light energy (photoautotroph) or chemical energy (chemoautotroph).
Heterotroph
Organism that digests another organism to use their complex organic molecules to release energy.
Photosynthetic Pigments
Molecules that absorb light energy, each pigment absorbs a range of wavelengths in the visible region and has its own distinctive peak of absorption.
Respiratory Substrate
Organic molecules respired to release energy.
