what are halal foods?
sunni = all fish + seafood shia = only fish with scaled
both: birds that don’t use talons to kill = no birds of prey. chicken, turkey, ok.
4-legged with split hooves which do not kill w fangs/claws. = rabbit, cow, camel, sheep, goat ok
eggs + milk from permitted animals
meat + fat from properly slaughtered animals.
Zabihah
animal ritually slaughtered by a Muslim.
- trachea, esophagus + carotid artery/jugular vein severed in 1 motion w sharp knife. blood drains out.

improperly slaughtered. swine, carnivores, reptiles, insects, worms, birds of prey, blood, alcoholic beverages + intoxicating drugs
when is fasting?
not on friday - ramadan is exception.
abstain from food, drink, meds, smoking, coitus from before break of dawn until sunset.
prupose for fasting?
religious obligation, pleasure of allah, wipe out previous sins, appreciate hunger of poor.
Ramadan
9th month of islamic calendar.
depending on latitude + season, fast can be 20+ hours.
meal patterns in ramadan
prior to daylight; after sunset (social meal), fast traditionally broken w three dates. food represent the culture of family/group.
ramadan = who is exempt
not reached puberty, elderly, chronic illness. groups exempt but must make up: recoverable illness, travelling, women during pregnancy, lactation, menstruation, engaged in hard labour
major feast days
eid al-fitr: festival of fast-breaking.
sweet-eid = sweet dishes served.
