adapt to society’s changing trends and preferences

stimulate change, creating the ‘need’ to consume, and then generate more profits.
e.g. of children’s toys?
in the early 20th century were quite simple, often wooded and painted in bright colours. They were carefully crafted, locally produced and reflected the nature of the decades with hand-carved wooden trains and hand-stitched dolls as examples. Cottage industries then had to compete with factories and the mass production of toys. A wider variety pf plastic toys were produced and accepted due to their durability in later decades. Massive toy stores such as Toys R Us opened to cater for the expansion in the industry.
