Surfing became a commodity through clever marketing techniques. This process of commodification has promoted surfing as an identity and a culture. Corporations play an instrumental part in this process, using media to advertise commercial products and paraphernalia and reinforce myths, jargons, beliefs and values associated with a PC such as surfing.

The media today is a key socialising agent. Some businesses are aligning their products with a pop culture in order to increase sales. Social media provided business and cooperation with marketing tools that have contributed significantly to the development and expansion of pop culture. E.g. Lady Gaga’s music video, ‘telephone’ clearly showed many products such as diet coke and polaroid as promotion.
