INVOLVED-Cylinder procedure Flashcards
Any steel cylinder that fails has the potential to project fragments up to ____?
Escaping gas - ignites - fireball of up to?
2oom
25m
Following the confirmation of cylinders - priority message - then an informative stating?
All cylinders must be cooled to ambient temperature, acetylene OR unidentified cylinders must be cooled for___?
Number of cylinders
Type
Implementation of procedure
TM
1 hour!
Use cylinder flow chart located___?
ROV?
In BA board - Aide memoir 6
Remotely operated vehicle - Request made via ILO
Cylinders alight at the valve group may be funder off providing?
Cylinder defined as;
The cylinder IS alight at the valve group - where the hoses attach and NOT from around the neck of the valve where the valve enters the cylinder.
Any vessel containing a gas or liquid under pressure
BCGA - CP
Cylinder heated - Steel weakens at:
Aluminium?
During a fire a composite cylinder may become?
British Compressed Gas Association - Competent Person
300c
200-250c
Porous
Composite cylinders may be allowed to burn off
Acetylene can self heat after the shell has cooled off
IC should send an informative containing the highest temp recorded
Within 25m BA to be worn
IC should send an informative stating:
Actions taken Number of evacuees HZ size + road closures The rap TM
If a acetylene cylinder fails the CAP, what happens?
The CAP consists of;
A further 1 hour cooling, followed by another CAP
Stop water after one hour Monitor Cyl with TIC and record Monitor Cyl for steaming Leave cooling water turned off for 15 min Apply momentary water spray 4 times = 1 hour
At this temp any water will violently react and boil off the surface of Cyl?
300c
The 200m HZ is only needed if the Cyl is in immediate danger of failing
HMEPOs must maintain a log containing:
Cyl
Cyl location
Cooling timings
CAP - timings
Decisions during CAP
BCGA have passed course in:
HMEPOs have been trained to id
British compressed gas association
Acetylene Cyl in fires
Manufacturer of Cyl - plus hazard zone management
Composite Cyl mainly used for..?
IDing an acetylene Cyl:
Aluminium lined Cyl treated as steel
LPG
Painted maroon
No coloured shoulder
Paper label on collar!
Retro reflective tape on collars (recent)
What four things should an incident commander try and determine to negate the necessity for a 200 metre cordon
What sort of cordon would then be put in place?
- The fire has been extinguished
- The cylinder is definitely not acetylene
- All cylinders present have been located
- The cylinders involved are receiving direct cooling.
A cordon around the incident sufficient to maintain a safe system of work
Which cylinders fail at the lower temperature?
And how do they fail..?
Composite.. .. but will not fail catastrophically failure of these cylinders will lead to an intensification of the fire
Can crews work in a hard zone?
Yes (following a RA by the IC), it’s not an exclusion zone
What details should be included on an informative?
Actions taken The no. of evacuees The HZ size and road closures The RVP and approach route The tactical mode
When do you stop cooling a cylinder?
Once the fire has been extinguished and the cylinder been cooled to ambient temperature as assessed with a TIC & checked it’s not leaking.
What must you do when handing a cylinder over?
Which form must you fill in?
Hand to owner/occupier who should be advised to contact the cylinder manufacturer using the competent person scheme
Form No 6104 - acetylene cylinder handover form
How long does the CAP usually take and does the HZ need to be in place throughout?
How does decomposition take place within an acetylene cylinder?
Typically 2 hrs and yes
It has to be heated, mechanical shock alone will not do it. However, if decomposition was already taken place within an acetylene cylinder as a result of heating, then the cylinder will be more sensitive to mechanical shock and any disturbance could cause fresh acetylene to enter the affected area and feed the decomposition process.
Acetylene alight at the valve group, usually due to what?
Most frequent type of this occurrence?
Valve either open or faulty
(With acetylene) - hoses are accidentally cut through by the operator
Talk about decomposition in an acetylene cylinder
Decomposition can NOT be initiated in an unheated, undamaged acetylene cylinder by mechanical shock alone.
However, if decomposition was already taking place within an acetylene cylinder as a result of heating then the cylinder will be more sensitive to mechanical shock as any disturbance could cause fresh acetylene to enter the affected area and feed the decomposition process
What is a leaking cylinder treated as?
What do you do?
If you can’t shut the cylinder down?
Haz Mat incident - shut it down if valve is undamaged, PPE to be worn as determined by the HMEPO or scientific advisor.
Monitor atmosphere for hazards, consider requesting RRT or FRU for DIM equipment.
When evacuating what do you do with people who refuse to leave and those who are a certain distance away (how far..)from the incident?
Who do you pass the info to of people that refuse to leave?
100m - instructed temporarily to stay indoors away from doors or windows which are in direct line of the incident
Senior police officer at scene
Describe what the CP (competent person) does at an incident?
Requested to attend protracted incidents
Offer advice to IC
Not their role to instruct the IC on the actions to be carried out
CP can assist in having cylinders collected
Name the three layers of a composite cylinder
What temp does aluminium fail at?
Gas barrier layer
Composite layer
Outer protection layer
200-250*C
Which is the only compressed gas to not have a coloured shoulder?
What colour are they (above)?
Most reliable way to id?
Acetylene
Maroon
Paper label attached to colour - or retro reflective tape or collars
