Introduction into Medical Sciences Flashcards
What is the smallest unit in the body?
A cell
What are organelles?
Within the cell there are multiple internal components that create the machinery that creates the energy that powers the cell to allow it to carry out its function.
How are cells structurally organised?
Tissues
Organs
Systems
What are the four types of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Nervous
Muscle
What are tissues?
Groups of cells that share the same characteristics or specialisations and perform a function
What are organs?
Collections of tissues, usually different types, that synchronise to perform a more complex function
What is the equation of life?
Nutrients + O2 = Energy (ATP) + Waste (incl. CO2)
What is the role of the cardiovascular system?
Delivers O2 and nutrients to cells, removes waste from cells
What is the role of the respiratory system?
Acquires O2, disposes of CO2
What is the role of the gastrointestinal system?
Acquires nutrients, disposes waste
What is the role of the renal system?
Disposes waste
What is the role of the musculoskeletal system?
Sources nutrients, removes us from danger and protects us from threat
What is the role of the immune system?
Protects from infection
What is the role of the nervous system?
Coordinates other systems
What is the role of the endocrine system?
Coordinates other systems, a major role in allowing cellular access to nutrients that have been absorbed
