Intro to Language Development Midterm Flashcards
How do other aspects of communication contribute to our interpretation of language?
Body language, pitch, paralinguistic things, tone, etc.
What do generativisits believe regarding language development? What do interactionists believe?
Nature vs. nurture
What is a phoneme?
Smallest unit of sound that still has meaning
A child overgeneralizes the past tense ending -ed, what domain would this language deficit fall in?
Morphology
Explain and give an example of semantics:
Meaning of words (vocab)
When interacting different types of people sometimes you use different types of language
Such as I don’t cuss around my parents but i do around my friends
If someone experiences trauma to the left side of their brain, what deficits might we expect? Identify at least 3.
Impairments in oral, visual, written language, difficulty with logical reasoning, difficulty following rapidly changing information
Describe social constructivist learning theory
Knowledge is constructed within social contexts through interactions as a knowledgeable individual
Explain the relationship between the arcuate fasciculus, broca’s area, the motor cortex and wernicke’s area
Receptive language is processed in wernicke’s area then sent to broca’s area via the articulate fasciculus and ends up in the motor cortex to signal muscles for speech
List the 5 domains of language
morphology , phonology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics
Describe the information processing theory
We attend to a stimulus, we discriminate which info to keep, we organize and store the info in order to recall it later
How does communicative intentionality develop?
Three stages:
pre-intentional
Reaching and grabbing
Intentional
Symbolic
Describe 3 oral reflexes
Bite-flexing jaw
Rooting- cheek
Sucking
List the 3 learning theories
Behavioral, cognitivist, social constructivist
In prelinguistic children, why are gestures particularly important?
Main mode of communication; leads to verbal language
List the 3 types of prompts parents use to encourage communication
Fill-ins, imitation and questions
