Intro to anatomy Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
- study of internal and external body structures
- relationships between structures (eg. bone and muscle)
Subdivisions of Anatomy
- Gross Anatomy
2. microanatomy
Gross Anatomy
- visible to the eye
eg. bones
Microanatomy
microscope required
- cytology
- histology
Cytology
the study of internal structures of individual cells
histology
study of tissues
tissues
groups of cells
levels of organization
simple to complex
- chemical level
- cellular level
- tissue level
- organ level
- organ system level
- organism (top of hierarchy)
(this is a hierarchy-each level contains those below)
chemical level
basic level
- atoms
- atoms join to form molecules
cellular level
-molecules form organelles which form cells
cell
basic unit of structure and function
- all cells contain chemicals but their functions may differ
eg. red blood cells (rbc), neurons, muscle cells
tissue level
a group of structurally similar cells with a common function
-there are four major types
four major types of tissues
- epithelial
- connective tissues
- muscles
- nervous
organ level
- 2 or more tissues working together for a common function
eg. stomach- all four major tissues
- function = digestion
organ system level
several related organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose
eg. respiratory system
- lungs, trachea, etc.
- function = respiration
