inheritance Flashcards
inheritance
transfer of genetically determined characteristics from on generation to the next
genetics
study of inheritance
23 chromosome pairs
- 22 homologous pairs autosomal- somatic characteristics
2. 1 pair sex chromosomes
alleles
genes occupying the same locus on homologous chromosomes
-can be homozygous or heterzygous
homozygous
same allele of a particular gene on homologous chromosomes
ie. both alleles express the same version of a trait
eg. blond hair bb. black hair BB
heterozygous
different alleles of the same gene
id. alles code for different expressions of the same trait
eg. Bb
genotype
catalogue of a person’s genes (genetic makeup)
eg Bb
phenotypes
expression of genotype (genes) to give observable characteristics
eg. black hair
dominant allele
eg B
expressed in phenotype regardless of other allele
BB or Bb- dominant allele expressed
eg. black hair
recessive allele
eg b
express in phenotype only if present on both alleles
bb-blond hair
prediction inheritance
punnett square
punnett square
determines probability of inheritance
- predicts offspring genotype and phenotype
eg. hair colour trait
sex linked/ x-linked inheritance
non-sexual inheritance determined by gene on the x chromosome
eg. hemophilia, colour blindness, duchenne’s muscular dystrophy- all due to recessive alleles on the x chromosome
XY
not truly homologous
-if gene is x-linked its expression is not masked b/c there is not corresponding allele on the Y chromosome
colorblindness
