Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILDs) - Asbestosis Flashcards
What is Asbestosis?
Diffuse Lower Lung fibrosis related to the inhalation of asbestos that manifests in patients with pleural plaque disease (more than 10 years following exposure).
Key Difference between Asbestosis and Mesothelioma.
Asbestosis - Severity associated to length of exposure.
Mesothelioma - even limited exposure can cause it.
Clinical Presentation of Asbestosis.
- SOB.
2. Reduced Exercise Tolerance.
Management of Asbestosis.
Conservative.
Nature of Asbestos (2).
- Fibrogenic.
- Oncogenic.
- Most Dangerous - Crocidolite (Blue) Asbestosis.
Clinical Consequences of Asbestos Inhalation (4).
- Lung Fibrosis.
- Pleural Thickening and Pleural Plaques.
- Adenocarcinoma.
- Mesothelioma.
Pleural Plaques (4).
- Benign and No Malignant Change.
- No Follow-Up.
- Commonest Form.
- Latency Period - 20-40 Years.
Pleural Thickening (1).
Asbestos Exposure - Diffuse Pleural Thickening similar pattern to an empyema or haemothorax.
Legal Aspect of Asbestos-Health Conditions.
- Eligible for Compensation (except Isolated Pleural Plques).
- Death = Coroner Referral.
