What is the SADC?
The SADC is made up of 16 African countries and SA is the most dominant of these.

SA hold more economic influence as they make up 2/3 of the SADC’s GDP.
How does being part of the SADC increase SA’s international influence?
SA exert international influence as they are one of the main dictators in the SADC.
How does being part of the SADC give SA political influence?
SA have political influence as they try to other countries within the SADC to become democratic due to their breaches of human rights.
What makes it questionable if SA deserves this amount of influence?
SA may not be a ‘role model’ as they have been corrupt, especially under the control of Zuma, and this makes it questionable if they deserve to hold this amount of influence.
Why is the questionability so negative?
SA hold a lot of power but that doesn’t mean that the influence they have form this power is always positive.
What is SA’s role in the UN?
SA are an active member of the UN and were most recently elected to the UNSC in 2019 for a 2 year term.
What does being part of the UN allow SA to do?
Being part of the UN allows SA to implement sanctions, take part in peacekeeping and initiate military action.
How does being part of the UN give SA influence?
Being part of the UN empowers the influence that SA have as they can voice their opinion and help to implement policies.
What is presidency in the UNSC?
Each member of the UNSC gets to be the president for two months during their term.
How did SA use their time as UNSC president?
As UNSC president you get to set the agenda for the month, and during one of their months SA decided to set the agenda to aim to ending the use of child soldiers.
How does SA have influence outside of the UNSC?
Outside of their term in the UNSC, SA took Israel to the International Court of Justice for genocide.
How was taking Israel to the ICJ internationally influential?
Taking Israel to the ICJ was a bold move and was an impactful leading foot as countries took this as a way to side with the argument and encouraged others to act.
How does being part of the UN limit SA’s international influence?
SA have the opportunity to influence internationally as part of the UN but are limited as they are not one of the 5 permanent members of the UNSC.

G20 is made up of the countries with the largest economies in the world who agree on global economic issues.
How does being part of G20 give SA international influence?
SA have international influence as they get to have a say on economic policies which will have an international impact.
How did SA become a representative for Africa in G20?
SA became a representative for Africa in G20 as they were ether only African country and during this they were able to convince G20 to agree on ‘Compact with Africa’.
How did SA stop being the only African country in G20?
SA campaigned for the AU to join G20 and successfully had them added as a member in 2023 although the name of the organisation did not change.
How was having the AU added as a G20 member beneficial?
Joining G20 gave the AU the same power as the EU who had been members of G20 since 1999.

SA are limited in the amount of international influence they have as they are not part of G7 like other members in G20.

BRICS is an alliance between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
What is the aim of BRICS?
The aim of BRICS is to shift the economic power dominance from the West.
How does BRICS hold economic influence?
BRICS hold economic influence as they make up 1/3 of the world’s GDP.
What is the New Development Bank?
The New Development Bank was introduced ed in 2015 by BRICS which ends money to developing countries for building infrastructure.
How is the New Development Bank beneficial?
The New Development Bank is beneficial as it helps poorer countries to develop.
What has SA done despite being in BRICS?
SA have maintained a good relationship with the West.
How would a good relationship with the West be beneficial for SA?
Having a good relationship with the West would suggest that SA would be beneficial to peace talks for the Ukraine War which would exert international influence.
How are SA limited in their influence in BRICS?
SA are influential as part of BRICS but they are also the newest member so are yet to gain the level of influence that other countries in the alliance have such as Russia and China.
