Interferon Flashcards
what are interferons?
cytokines released by body in response to viral infections and neoplasia
how are interferons classified?
according to cellular origin + type of receptor they bidn to
what does ifn-a bind to?
type 1 receptor
what does ifn-b bind to?
type 1 receptor
what does ifn-y bind to?
type 2 receptor
where is ifn-a made and what is its function?
leucocytes
antiviral action
so useful in hep b and c, kaposi’s sarcoma, metastatic RCC, hairy cell leukaemia
adverse effects of ifn-a?
flu-like symptoms
depression
tremor
cough
where is ifn-b made and function?
fibroblasts
antiviral action
use of ifn-b?
reduces frequency of exacerbations in pt with relapsing-remitting MS
where is ifn-y made and function?
mostly nk cells but also t helper
weaker antiviral action, mostly involved in immunomodulation (esp macrophage activation)
when is ifn-y useful?
chronic granulomatous disease
osteopetrosis
