Intention-behaviour gap Flashcards
Intention-behaviour gap
Phenomenon where people have explicit decisions/intentions to change their behaviour but fail to take action.
When people have medium/large change, the intention only leads to small-medium change in behahavior
Motivational models
Challenged by this gap. Just motivation is not sufficient, against models that see intention as main determinant:
- Health Belief Model
- Theory of Reasoned Action
- Theory of Planned Behaviour
Most important factors in motivational models
Intention/motivation as the proximal determinant of behaviour
Attitudes; general pos/neg evaluation of behaviour
Subjective norm; global perception of social pressure
Perceived behavioural control; self-efficacy
Better predictor
Frequent past performance x stable context. Aka, its habit formation that predicts it better. Law of effect.
W. James
Early opponent of habits. Believed we should make useful behaviour a habit as soon as possible.
