Goal-directed behaviour in
Suggested by DSM and in line with the cognitive theory of OCD:
The interpretation of the obsession/intrusion causes fear/distress. These dysfunctional thoughts lead to compulsions to avoid consequences of the obsession, where the temporary relief forms a negative reinforcer.
Compulsive checking cognitive theory (Rachman)
3 multipliers:
- High perceived responsibility
- High perceived probability of harm
- High perceived seriousness of harm
Together equal the intense/prolonged checking
Cognitive theory of OCD
Compulsive acts are goal directed aimed at preventing feared events/neutralizing fear, arising from obsession/bias
The compulsion is a consequence of obsessions, so therapy should focus first on addressing the obsessions/bias
Habit theory of OCD
Temporary relief caused by performance of compulsions may lead to reinforcement of habitual rituals associated with antecedent triggers.
Therefore, compulsions are driven by strong habits (law of effect)
