With Diabetes, what are the Intrinsic factors affecting wounds healing?
A
- Decreased blood flow and oxygen to a wound
- Decreases function of red blood cells that carry nutruents to the tissues
- Decreases WBC to fight infection, increases risk of gangrene
- Nerves are also affected which causes a loss in sensation (they cant feel developing or worsening wounds/blisters)

With Diabetes, what are the Extrinsic factors affecting wounds healing?
A
The pt should monitor their blood sugar
- Healthy diet can regulate glucose levels and provide nutrients needed to enhance healing process
- Keeping pressure off the wound
- Cessation of smoking
- Cardiovascular health, increases circulation
- Chroic inflammation is a common Sx with diabetes

What are some of the affects of Diabetes and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?
A
- May not feel pain
- May not be able to sense temperature
- May slow wound healing
- Minor injuries can develop into serious infections if not detected early and treated promptly

Those with diabetes, what should we educate them on?
A
- Wash feet daily with warm water and soap. Avoid high temp. due to decreased sensation and chck with elbow
- Assure feet are dry especially in areas between toes due to potential maceration
- When skin is dry, apply moisterizer but avoid between toes
- Trim toe nails
- Choose socks that dont irritate feet
- Protect your feet at all times
- Inspect your feet
