how can you administer injections?
intramuscular, subcutaneous or intradermal - determined by the nature of the drug administered
what should you check before you administer any drug?
the name of the drug, dose, route, time and expiry date, the integrity of the packaging, colour, cloudiness and diluent if needed
why might you need a green (21G) needle instead of a blue (23G) in intradermal?`
it depends on the subcutaneous tissue of the patient - green if more
what do you do with a intradermal injection?
check underlying anatomy, for bruising or previous site and slightly stretch the skin. Insert the needle at 90 degrees and aspirate to see if blood (restart with clean equipment if there is)
what do you need to check after?
for a localised or more systemic reaction
what needle do you use for subcut injections?
you use an orange (25G) needle
how do you do a subcut?
use thumb and forefinger to squeeze skin above subcut tissue together and insert at 45 degrees
how do you administer a heparin or insulin injection?
it is subcut but are in prefilled syringes and therefore you inject at 90 degrees to accommodate for the short needle
what might you use an intradermal injection for?
local anasthetic
what needle do you use for intradermal?
orange (25G)
what angle does needle go in for intradermal?
it goes in at 15 degrees - may bleb - normal
which organ controls the blood glucose of body?
the pancreas
what is the process for taking a blood glucose?
introductions etc, then prime pen and attach clean lancet, chose lateral site on finger warn patient, press lancet button and ask patient to hold downward to obtain large drop of blood. Cover test pad and put in monitor - will draw up and calculate. Ensure bleeding stops - act immediately if necessary
