what is the general observation?
patient - colour, consciousness, comfortable and general habitus
bedside - NBM, PEG, catheter, IV
what is the inspection of the hands comprising?
leukonychia, koilonychia, palmar creases, dupytrens contracture, palmar erythema, spider naevi, liver flap
what do you look for in the face?
Kayser-Fleischer rings and jaundice in eyes, pallor, telangiectasia, ulcers, glossitis, candidiasis and angular stomatits
what happens after face?
lymphadenopathy (usual and left supraclavicular fossa)
what do you want to look for on abdomen?
lumps, distention, symmetry shape, scars, peristalsis, pulsation, venous distension, discolouration, spider naevi
where do you palpate?
whilst flat - 9 regions of the abdomen with warm hands and looking for signs of discomfort away from area of pain clockwise - light then deep - organomegaly and AAA, ballot the kidneys and aorta
what does percussion test?
outline of liver, spleen and bladder - fluid thrill and shifting dullness in ascites
what will auscultation test for?
bruits (aortic and renal) and bowel sounds - round the abdomen, then in midline and then on either side of aortic area for renal
what are the end pieces?
examine for inguinal hernia, external genitalia, rectal exam, temperature, urinalysis and stool sample
