information processing Flashcards
what is information processing
- the process in which our senses collect all the information available to us before our brain processes it and responds in a way we think is appropriate
input
performer will recieve lots of information about environment they are performing in from their senses. its sent to the brain where it selects relevant info
decision making
the information is analysed and the performer will try to select the appropriate response. can access memories of similar experiences to inform their choice.
in the decision making process, where are the decisions stored and how many pieces of info can the brain store at a time in the short term in 1 minute
short term memory at first, once its repeated multiple times then into the long term
7
output
decision is acted upon. sent from brain to muscles for them to carry it out
feedback
information is recieved having completed the response. This can be used as the input for future decisions,
recieves it in 2 ways
what are the 2 feedbacks the performer can recieve
intrinsic-
recieved from the performers thoughts, emotions. can also be the physical feeling of the performer
extrinsic-
recieved from a coach, a spectator or video
short term memory
info is lost if not repeated or important
can only focus on one piece of info at a time- called single channel hypothesis
long term memory
important info is stored in the long term memory, or information that hs been repeated a lot of times
Our brains can only process one piece of information at a time. This feature is called the
single Channel hypothesis.
order of the information processing processes
- input
- decision making
- output
- feedback
limited channel capacity
Our brain can only process certain amounts of information. If all information sent to the brain was processed, this would cause overload. Can cause a delay in performance.
SINGLE CHANNEL HYPOTHESIS
The theory which states that the brain selects and deals with 1 stimulus at a time.
