Inflammation 4: Acute non-suppurative Inflammation Flashcards
Enumerate types of acute non-suppurative inflammation
- Serous
- Fibrinous
- Catarrhal
- Pseudomembranous (membranous)
- Allergic
- Hemorrhagic
- Necrotic
Example of serous Inflammation
- burn blisters
- Pleural effusion
- Pericardial effusion
- peritoneal effusion
- synovial effusion
Cause of serous inflammation
Moderate injury leading to moderate increase in vascular permiability in serous sacs
Healing of serous inflammation
by resolution
Cause of Fibrinous inflammation
More severe injury to serous sac than in serous inflmmation, leading to higher increase in vascular permiability, causing fibrinogen to pass through endothelial barrier
Bread & butter appearance
examples of fibrinous inflammation
- Lobar pneumonia
- fibrinous inflmmation of serous sacs
Appearance of fibrinous inflammation in
bread and butter
microscopic appearance of fibrinous Inflammation
extravascular fibrin:
Pink (eosinophilic) meshwork threads
fibrinogen has entered serous sac, turned into fibrin & created meshwork
Healing of Fibrinous inflammation
either:
* Fibrinolysis & removal of fibrin & macrophages —> resolution
* replacement by fibroblasts—> scar tissue
cause of Caterrhal inflammation
Moderate/ mild inflammation to Mucous glands that increases secretion & causes irritation of the glands
Examples of catarrhal inflammation
- Catarrhal rhinitis (common cold)
- Catarrhal appendicitis
Cause of Pseudomembranous/ membranous Inflammation
Severe inflammation of mucous membranes caused by powerful endotoxin
Example of exotoxins causing pseudomembranous inflmmation
- Diphtheria in larynx
- Shigella bacilli in colon/large intenstine
which cells increase in number during allergic reactions
Eosinophils
Lymphocytes & plasma cells increase during
Viral infection
