Actinomycosis Flashcards
Causative organism of Actinomycosis
Actinomyces Israeli
(anaerobic gram +ve commensal Bacteria)
normal site of Actinomyces Israeli
Oral cavity
Mode of infection of Actinomycosis
Endogenous (from inside the body), when immunity is lowered
Gross Pathological features of Actinomycosis
Gross:
* Multiply Interconnected subcutaneous abcesses
* opening to surface by multiple sinuses
* Discharges Sulphur granules: pus & yellow bacterial colonies
Microscopic Pathological features of Actinomycosis
- Central zone: pus containing bacterial colonies, thin filaments & club like swellings
- Mid zone: Inflammatory cells (polymorph cells & pus cells)
- Outer zone: Fibrosis
Most common type of Actinomycosis
Cervicofascial Actinomycosis (60%): affects angle of mandible, parts of neck and face
Enumerate types of Actinomycosis
- Cervicofascial Actinomycosis
- Blood spread (may occur)
- Intestinal Actinomycosis
- Pulmonary Actiomycosis
- Skin Actinomycosis
True or false, Actinomycosis doesn’t spread by lymphatics, reason ?
True
large size filaments –> can’t spread by lympahtics
