Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis Flashcards
Causative agent?
Bovine herpesvirus 1
6 main forms of disease?
Abortion, ocular, respiratory, infectious pustular vulvovaginitis, generalized neonatal infection, encephalitis
What is “red nose”
Infectious pustular vulvovaginitis and rhinotracheitis
Modes of transmission
Airborne Contact (breeding, in utero, birth if passing through infected vagina)
Major respiratory clinical sign
Red nose - inflammation of muzzle and nostrils and nasal discharge. Can sometimes see white plaques
There are other CS associated, but this is the main one
Main ocular clinical sign
Severe conjunctivitis
Watery discharge with corneal opacity
There are other CS associated, but this is the main one. Must differentiate from moraxella bovis
Clinical signs of infectious pustular vulvovaginitis
Red spots and pustules lining vulva and vagina
Tail twitching
Frequent urination
There are other CS associated, but this is the main one
When does IBR abortion occur?
5-6 months gestation
What happens if you give MLV to pregnant cow?
You will cause abortion, don’t do it
What organ systems are involved with generalized neonatal infection
Respiratory, GI, liver, kidney, adrenal
What is usually the outcome is generalized neonatal infection?
It is usually fatal
Treatment of IBR?
No effective treatment
Supportive care and abx to prevent secondary infection if they have the respiratory form.
NSAIDS, shade, water, good feed
Control?
Isolate infected animals
Isolate new animals coming into the farm
Vaccinate (don’t use MLV on pregnant cow, DO NOT use live vaccines in neonatal calves)
